Swamp Tiger Butterfly Danaus affinis

The Swamp Tiger Butterfly, Danaus affinis, is a rare butterfly sited at the Aquatic Club, Coomba Reserve. This butterfly depends on a vine, Cynanchun carnosum, which is found close to the waters edge, in salt marsh or swamp oak forest. This is the host plant for this butterfly and it's existence is dependent on the survival of this plant.

This area is special and needs to be seen before it becomes too popular. It has natural beauty, water activities and general relaxation.

I went for a walk near Urunga last weekend and there butterflies everywhere. Plague proportions. I didn't recognise them - but I did recognise the vine. Then a butterfly watcher on the walk (he didn't have his net though) said they were Swamp Tigers and they fed on Cynanchum vine. And back came memories of Coomba Park.
